Jennavier Recommends: Christmas Version

One of the reasons I really, really wanted to start a blog was to tell other people about awesome books. Yes, this is a writerly blog and yes, this blog is mostly meant to support my own (mostly theoretical) books. But I cannot escape my first love, which is reading. After all, it’s unlikely that I would be so determined to be a writer if I hadn’t been surrounding by great books since birth.

My problem is this: my inaugural recommendation post is coming just a few weeks before Christmas. So the book should be Christmas themed, right? So I scoured my memory to try to find a book, any book, that just meant *Christmas* to me. After 20 minutes of naval gazing the only thing I could think of was The Christmas Box by Richard Paul Evens. I haven’t read it as an adult so I can’t tell you how it ages, but 8 year old me adored it. So it’s a sort of lukewarm recommendation- with the million new Christmas “items” books this one came first, and a little girl loved it. I’m also thinking I need to read more Christmas themed books.

On a different note, there are a million movies that it just wouldn’t be Christmas without. A Muppet Christmas Carol is probably my favorite Christmas movie ever, but I can’t leave out the others. There’s White Christmas, The Santa Clause, Miracle on 34th Street, and so many more. When they shout out the window that “Santa Clause Wins!” I cry every. Single. Time. But those are pretty old school, so if you’re my generation you might be looking for something newer. May I take this moment to recommend The Most Wonderful Time of the Year. It’s a recent favorite and I’m addicted to it. How can you not love a story that features Christmas, romance, Henry Winkler (not in the romance!), and a heroine who threatens to run her neighbor over with a car? Well, you just have to.

Now that I’ve used my book recommendation status to hawk movies at you I think I’ll get back to watching them. Merry Christmas and happy reading my friends!
